Letter from Susan

My dearest Jacqui You have been a light in my life. Your vitality has been something I have endlessly admired. You have always enjoyed being at the centre of the action – it is intrinsic to your personality and I admired it while I watched you. But in doing that you always included others. You mobilised, energised and enthused. You sang and got other people to sing and play – you brought joy and spread it around in doing that. You held me up when I was down - especially a few years ago. You supported me and listened even when you were a bit mystified. You accepted me regardless because that is a mark of who you are. I am eternally grateful to you for that. It has been a privilege being part of your and Andrew’s life over the past 25 years. You let me in. It is not something everyone does so graciously and easily. You let me be “Auntie” to your lads and Godmother to Freddie – and that has been a special gift too. One I deeply appreciate. We celebrated together – many birthdays, Christmases, the millennium, our 100th anniversary in New York. And when it wasn’t a celebration you just endeavoured to make the most of being alive. We experienced together – travelling, exploring, hanging out. Doing what friends do. Just being adults – and occasionally not! We have grieved together. You were so brave to come to Mum’s funeral in the midst of your own illness - it touched me greatly. Through all of this you have shown me the way to a better life – a huge gift. Thank you for your love and care; thank you for being you. Susan
